Herbig, Hernandez join mayor’s ticket as council candidatesBy David WildsteinJanuary 04 2021 8:08 am

Parsippany Mayor Michael Soriano announced today that he will seek re-election to a second term to helm Morris County’s largest municipality.

Cori Herbig and Judy Hernandez will run for township council on a ticket with Soriano.  They will replace Janice McCarthy and Emily Peterson, who announced last week that they will not seek re-election following a stormy relationship with Soriano.

“My administration has worked tirelessly to reverse the mistakes of the past and make municipal government work on your behalf,” said Soriano, a Democrat who ousted a GOP incumbent four years ago. “We have made tremendous strides in the last three years towards building a township that puts your needs over political considerations. With Cori and Judy by my side, we will continue to make Parsippany the model for our neighboring towns to follow.”

Herbig and Hernandez are making their second bids for council.  Hernandez came within 206 votes of ousting a Republican incumbent, while Herbig lost by 319.

“Parsippany residents have hit the jackpot with this ticket,” said Parsippany Democratic Municipal Chairman Matt Clarkin. “The executive, legislative, and volunteer experience that Mayor Soriano, Cori, and Judy bring to the table is unprecedented at the local level. This is the team we need to keep our township moving in the right direction.”

Decades of infighting among Parsippany Republicans led to Democratic mayors for 33 of the last 54 years in a Republican town that once provided huge pluralities for GOP candidates running statewide and in Morris County.

But now Democrats have been battling, an event that could boost GOP chances to regain the mayoral post in 2021.

Four years ago, Soriano, a charismatic union electrician, defeated two-term Mayor Jamie Barbiero by 832 votes, 53%-47%.  That came five months after Barbiero just narrowly survived a Republican primary challenge.

Soriano has the backing of Morris County Democratic Chairman Chip Robinson.

“I am proud to support Cori Herbig and Judy Hernandez for Council. They ran a great campaign in 2019 and are great individuals who will faithfully serve the community on Council,” Robinson said.
