“Donald Trump should be prosecuted for a litany of crimes he’s committed,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-Paterson), one of Trump’s fiercest congressional critics. “Add this latest attempted election-rigging felony to the bill of indictment.”
The newspaper obtained an audio tape of Trump’s phone call with Georgia’s top election official, Brad Raffensperger, where he pushed to find 11,780 votes – one more than Biden’s margin of victory.
“We now have irrefutable proof of a president pressuring and threatening an official of his own party to get him to rescind a state’s lawful, certified vote count and fabricate another in its place,” said Bob Bauer, a senior Biden advisor.
Trump is heard both threatening Raffensperger and imploring him to help him hold on to the presidency.
“You have a big election coming up and because of what you’ve done to the president — you know, the people of Georgia know that this was a scam,” the Washington Post reported Trump as saying. “Because of what you’ve done to the president, a lot of people aren’t going out to vote, and a lot of Republicans are going to vote negative, because they hate what you did to the president. Okay? They hate it. And they’re going to vote. And you would be respected, really respected, if this can be straightened out before the election.”
Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) tweeted that “continued attempts from numerous Republicans, up to and including President Trump, to undermine our democratic elections without merit or evidence are in direct violation of their oath to uphold the Constitution.”
